Edward Christopher "Ed" Sheeran (born 17 February 1991) is an English singer-songwriter. Raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, he moved to London in 2008 to pursue a musical career. In early 2011, Sheeran released an independent extended play, No. 5 Collaborations Project, which caught the attention of both Elton John and Jamie Foxx. He then signed to Asylum Records. His debut album + (2011), containing the singles "The A Team" and "Lego House", was certified quintuple platinum in the United Kingdom. The track "You Need Me" was originally released on the You Need Me extended play in 2009. The new version of "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" was re-recorded with a heavier beat, and peaked at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart.
After being told by his original managers that he needed to conform to succeed by dying his ginger hair and ditching his unique loop-pedal rapped delivery, Sheeran responded by penning this song. A live version of the tune, which Sheeran filmed for leading youth broadcaster SB:TV in February 2010, immediately racked up 100,000 hits in two days on YouTube.
The song was chosen as the second single and follow up to his breakthrough hit "The A Team." It was released on August 28, 2011 in the United Kingdom.
